The visa however does not necessarily guarantee you entry to the country you want to travel to, in this case Australia.  It is important to understand the visa can be likened to the key to the door, and although you have the ability to enter, immigration officials (aka the bodyguards) may still decide not to let you through.  This is not a big issue for Australia and as long as you are a good citizen, you should have no problem.

Some countries also restrict entry based on appearance, clothing, amount of money and medical status of the traveller, but in most cases you will not find harsh restrictions in Australia.  However you may need to show you have sufficient funds to cover your trip, submit to health checks and prove your ongoing travel arrangements, depending on the type of Australian visa you possess.

Types of Australian Visas

Depending on the reason why you want to travel to Australia, and how long you intend to stay, will start to dictate what type of Australian visa you require.  The six main types of Australian visas are listed below:

Australian Travel Visa

If you are planning on visiting Australia purely as a holiday, to sightsee or party with friends and catch up with relatives for a defined period you will need a travel visa, officially known as a ‘tourist visa’.  The key rule here is that you are not allowed to work in any form on a travel visa.  There are two types available the Short-Stay Tourist Visa and the Long-Stay Tourist Visa. Australian Business Visa

This is a confusing visa for many.  Like the Australian tourist visa it is available in two forms:

• Business Visa – Short Stay and
• Business Visa – Long Stay,

but it is not the visa you will require should you wish to come to Australia to work.  This visa is primarily for men and women who wish to visit the country in order to conduct business, including attending conferences, meetings, conducting presentations and negotiating new business.

Australian Working Holiday Visa

Australian Skilled Visa

This visa is designed to attract skilled workers to Australia for the purpose of improving the diversity of skills and level of expertise in Australia.  There are many different types of visa category within this section including sponsored, independent and regional visas.  These visas are designed for a person who may wish to immigrate to Australia in the long term and form part of the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program.

Australian Family Visa / Australian Partner Visas

These visas are specifically for spouses, children, parents and family members who want to apply to migrate to Australia.  These visas are usually issued as a result of one family member immigrating successfully to Australia through the Skilled Migration program and wishing to bring the rest of their family to Australia.  However if you do find yourself hopelessly in love with an Aussie, you may also be in need of this visa.

Where to Start

As you can see, there are many different types of visa available and all have different Australian Visa Requirements.  Even those visas covered above, are just the common ones, which are regularly requested for travel into Australia.

If you are unsure about which Australian Visa Application you require, then a great place to start looking is on the Australian Department of Immigration’s website.  This link will take you to their Visa Wizard, which will help determine which visa is right for you based on your answers to a set of predetermined questions.  You can do this online.

Alternatively there are a number of different bureaus and advisories that can assist you in finding the right visa.  This is not the cheapest way to find a visa however, and therefore is only really worthwhile if you are looking to migrate or have specific circumstances that may cause issues with your application.
